Vulnetix · Advisory published May 19, 2022
Repository hijacking (chainjacking) attack on popular password hashing library with 2.5M+ lifetime downloads. Compromised to exfiltrate AWS credentials. Original maintainer hautelook deleted GitHub account in August 2021. Attacker (Yunus Aydın, Istanbul-based researcher who later claimed responsibility) registered abandoned username and published malicious versions. Modified PasswordHash.php specifically targets AWS_ACCESS_KEY_ID and AWS_SECRET_ACCESS_KEY environment variables. Credentials base64-encoded and exfiltrated to anti-theft-web.herokuapp[.]com. Same attack pattern used against Python ctx package on PyPI.
